Dear Friends:
In May, we participated in exciting events with graduates and new military recruits in Indiana, and in Russia through the Nunn-Lugar program.
On May 9, I joined the faculty, staff, graduating seniors, family, and friends at Ball State University's commencement. Following the ceremonies, President Jo Ann Gora and I broke ground on Ball State's record-setting geothermal energy initiative.
The following weekend I went to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the annual Armed Forces Day celebration and swearing in of new military recruits. I look forward to this event each year and the opportunity to meet with these courageous young women and men.
At the end of the month we traveled to Siberia to celebrate the opening of the chemical weapons destruction facility at Shchuchye, Russia. This marks the culmination of a decades-long effort to help Russia destroy part of its chemical weapons stockpile and dramatically reduce the threat of proliferation.
Back in Washington, we had an active month in the Foreign Relations Committee with hearings featuring testimony from former President Jimmy Carter, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and many other talented and distinguished individuals. Video from the hearings is posted on my official Senate YouTube page, http://www.youtube.com/senatorlugar.
Sincerely,
